about the Program

Building competitive athletes, confident leaders, and a

strong sports community.

ABOUT

Virginia hurricanes basketball

The Virginia Hurricanes, based in Arlington, VA, run competitive girls basketball teams for girls in grades 3 through 12.  Our teams compete primarily throughout the Spring and Summer, with some teams also playing in the Fall.

We hold open gyms in January for players interested in learning more about the Hurricanes program and meeting Hurricanes players and coaches. In February, tryouts are held for our Spring/Summer teams.

The Hurricanes form separate teams for 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grades, as well as teams for high school girls. Most age groups feature multiple teams to support athlete development at different competitive levels.

PHILOSOPHY

Virginia hurricanes basketball

The Virginia Hurricanes program is devoted to helping female athletes achieve their basketball potential in a supportive and safe environment.  The Hurricanes are committed to providing girls superior instruction, solid fundamental skills and high-level competition, while developing the character traits of confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, leadership and accountability on and off the court.

The Hurricanes strive to promote a family environment — meaning that families throughout the program know each other and feel they are part of a community working towards a common goal of providing a positive experience for their children.

HISTORY

Virginia hurricanes basketball

Mike Rivera founded the Virginia Hurricanes in 2008 after spending several years with large AAU girls basketball programs as both a parent and coach. Mike's goal was to offer families an alternative basketball program that:

  • Focuses on improving each player’s core fundamental basketball skills;

  • Provides year-round opportunities for players wanting to devote extra time outside the regular spring AAU season to develop their skills;

  • Emphasizes and pursues the interests and goals of the players — and does not place the interests of the club or its coaches over that of the players; and

  • Never denies a player the opportunity to participate due to financial constraints.
